Erosion mats

Erosion control mats are used to protect topsoil from rainfall and surface run-off erosion. The advantage of using this type of mats is the protection against topsoil erosion by weather agents and the formation of vegetation that exercises a natural erosion control function.

Erosion control biomats are made with biodegradable natural materials such as jute, straw, coconut, cellulose fibre felt, and they can be predropped for a more rapid development of the vegetation.

Another type of erosion control mats are geomats made with synthetic materials. This type of mats – mainly made of polymeric monofilament – can be employed to protect slopes, by installing them and covering them with topsoil, so that the roots, after being tangled to the synthetic mat, build one final protective layer against topsoil erosion.

The erosion control function can be requested also in case of reinforced earth structures to prevent leakage of the filling materials from the reinforcement grid meshes. In these cases, apart from traditional biodegradable or monofilament products – solutions with glass fibre micromeshes or mulching films can be employed.
